The PNG Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has appealed for calm as damaging infighting continues among senior police officers ahead of the appointment of a new police commissioner.

His call follows the suspension of two of PNG's most senior policemen, a deputy commissioner and an assistant commissioner, for insubordination and causing disaffection within the force.

Sir Michael called on officers to stay loyal to Acting Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga and help him restore discipline and stability.

The AAP news agecny says Deputy Police Commissioner, Gari Baki, and Assistant Commissioner, Raphael Haufolo ,were suspended from duties on Friday for insubordination and causing disaffection.

Yesterday, members of the police airborne unit were disarmed in Port Moresby after flying in from the Highlands province, and one member faces attempted murder charges after the discharge of a firearm.
