French Polynesian veterans condemn North Korean test

The French Polynesian nuclear test veterans group, Moruroa e Tatou, has condemned the reported North Korean nuclear weapons test.

In a statement, it says it is alarmed at the development, adding that nuclear arms don't lead to peace and co-operation among peoples.

But the organisation says North Korea is only following the example set by others who have nuclear weapons but refuse to renounce them.

Mururoa e Tatou has also expressed concern about the effect of the test on the North Korean workers' health.

The veterans have been unsuccessful in getting France to accept a link between the tests and the poor health of those seeking compensation as France maintains that its tests in the Pacific were clean.
