Samoa police orders inquiry into early release of inmate

9:19 am on 12 October 2006

An inmate who was released early by Samoan police has been returned to Tafai'gata prison.

Lope Lemusu was let go as he was about to start serving a 15-month sentence for negligent driving causing death.

This happened after the family told police at the jail that they had a fine imposed as a result of a lesser charge.

The acting police commissioner, Papalii Li'o Ta'eu Masipa'u, says there was poor communication between the police who were in court and police at the watch house about the conditions of the sentence which led to his early release.

Papalii has now ordered an internal inquiry into the incident.
