The New Caledonian environmentalist group, Caugern, has called a meeting today to discuss its next step against the Goro Nickel project.
The two-billion US dollar Goro Nickel project is the largest enterprise in the South Pacific, but is opposed by Caugern and the activist group, Rheebu Nuu, which both claim the project will cause pollution.
A spokesperson for Caugern, Jacques Boengkih, says participants will discuss what stance to take against the project.
"The Caugern, the council for the management of resources is holding a general meeting in Kouaoua, which is one of the oldest mining towns on the east coast of New Caledonia. The programme is mainly to discuss the current situation at Goro Nickel and also what is happening to the northern project."
Mr Boengkih says Rheebu Nuu's leader, Raphael Mapou, has just returned from the United Nations in New York, where he made a plea about its concerns about Goro Nickel.
