Tongan MPs set for tour of kingdom

7:36 am on 14 October 2006

Tongan MPs are to go on their annual national tour for two weeks from October the 23rd.

The Matangi Tonga website says the tour was initially set for mid-July but was postponed because of the royal funeral of the late Prince Tu'ipelehake and Princess Kaimana Tuku'aho.

The government has set aside 100,000 US dollars for the tour.

The money is to enable members to finance projects that they discover during their tour of the outer islands and the rural villages.

The tour's objective is for Cabinet Ministers to view development projects and for the People's Representatives to meet the people in the islands and the rural areas.

The legislature is due to reconvene in early November.
