The New Caledonian Kanak activist leader, Raphael Mapou, has talked to officials at the United Nations about his concerns about the Goro Nickel project.
The two-billion US dollar project is opposed by the Kanak Caugern and Rheebu Nuu groups, who say the project will cause serious pollution.
A spokesperson for Rheebu Nuu and Caugern, Jacques Boengkih, says Mr Mapou has just returned from meeting the UN's Special Political and Decolonisation Committee.
"Raphael Mapou, it seems that he was the only petitioner from New Caledonia. And he made a report on the current situation in New Caledonia, and of course talking particularily on the Goro Nickel situation and the situation of the indigenous people."
