Solomons Solicitor General leaves post early

11:33 am on 23 October 2006

Solomon Islands solicitor-general, Melbourne lawyer Nathan Moshinsky, is leaving his post early, citing family reasons and the deteriorating political situation.

Mr Moshinsky has clashed with the Solomons Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, who threatened to "deal with" him following last week's arrest of Immigration Minister Peter Shanel over the Julian Moti affair.

A police raid on Mr Sogavare's office on Friday involving Australian officers of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) has infuriated the Sogavare government and deepened an ongoing diplomatic row with Canberra.

Mr Moshinsky has only six weeks left on his three-year contract.
