The suspension of American Samoa's director of education Dr Lui Tuitele has been extended while an investigation continues into the department's operations.

Governor Togiola Tulafono says he is extending Dr. Tuitele's leave of absence until further notice and he expected that by next month, a final decision will be made regarding the department.

The governor was responding to Senate President Lolo Letalu Moliga's request for a criminal investigation of education staff implicated in a fraudulent paycheque scheme and the theft of highs school funds.
