Names of poll watchers in American Samoa's election must be submitted today

12:50 pm on 4 November 2006

Candidates for the 2006 general election in American Samoa have until the close of business today to submit the names of their poll watchers for the 44 designated polling stations territory-wide.

In past election years, there were problems with individuals showing up at polling stations, to represent certain candidates but their names were not on the Election Office list, which resulted in confusion and sometimes disagreements.

This year, the Election Office wants to make sure that procedures are followed by candidates, so there are no problems at the polling stations.

Deputy election officer, Laulu Mageo says that if the name of the poll watcher is not on the Election Office list come election day, that individual will not be allowed to sit at the polling station as a poll watcher for a candidate.

Registered voters in the territory go to the polls November 7th to elect American Samoa's delegate to the U.S. Congress and the 20 member local House of Representatives.
