New Caledonian union stops publication of only daily paper

2:02 pm on 7 November 2006

The striking CSTNC union has prevented the publication of today's edition of New Caledonia's only daily newspaper, Les Nouvelles Caledoniennes.

According to its editor, members of the union say they are unhappy with the newspaper's coverage of their strike which is now in its seventh week.

This is not the first time the CSTNC has disrupted the local press.

Two weeks ago, unionists assaulted a journalist of the public broadcaster, RFO, and took his recording equipment.

The CSTNC has also caused traffic problems in Noumea by blocking a key access road.

The action is likely to prompt Congress members to cancel this afternoon's planned meeting with the union to end the conflict.

The union has demanded the departure of foreign workers, lower prices and the resignation of the government.
