Solomons upholds ban on sea cucumber export

12:36 pm on 9 November 2006

The Solomon Islands Fisheries Advisory Committee says the ban on the harvesting and export of sea cucumber will remain until a management plan is in place to protect the resource.

The Department of Fisheries Permanent Secretary Ethel Sigimanu says the plan is being done under the NZ Aid funded Institutional Strengthening Project and spearheaded by the World Sea Centre.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports there has been pressure on the Minister of Fisheries to lift the ban by exporters and people who depend on the sea cucumber for their livelihood.
