PNG parliament curbs Ombudsman Commission

The Papua New Guinea parliament has voted in an organic law to restrict the Ombudsman Commission to limit its investigative powers.

The move means that in handing down rulings the commission will now be forced to adopt the rules of evidence.

"There has been an outcry by parliamentarians that the Ombudsman Commission was above the law in terms of its investigations into MPs as well as bureaucrats."
