Lengthy New Caledonian strike set to carry on after attempts at talks fail

7:00 pm on 9 November 2006

A lengthy strike in New Caledonian is set to continue after the CSTNC union's scheduled meeting with the Congress this afternoon was cancelled.

Both parties refused to attend the meeting.

The union is unhappy about being denied authorisation to hold a demonstration, while congress members pulled out after two members of the public were violently attacked by union members yesterday.

The attacks happened at two toll gates on the main roads north and south of Noumea where unionists were distributing flyers.

Two drivers, who refused to accept a flyer, were physically assaulted by the unionists.

Harold Martin, the president of the Congress, is blaming the CSTNC leader, Sylvain Néa, for inciting violence amongst his followers.

Mr Martin is urging police to find the perpetrators of the violence as soon as possible.

When approached for comment, Mr Néa said he had not been informed of the incidents.
