An advisor to the Tongan prime minister says there have been some reports of deaths and injuries following yesterday's violence.

But Lopeti Senituli says he cannot confirm the reports.

He says the prime minister, Dr Feleti Sevele, has asked for help from both Australia and New Zealand.

He says the details of what has been requested will be announced after a cabinet meeting this afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy says about 100 people have sought assistance from them since the rioting began.
