A Fiji Labour Party cabinet minister facing the sack for opposing the budget says the move doesn't mean he's against the coalition government.

Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi is one of four Labour MPs who could be dismissed for voting against the budget, which was passed in parliament on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, has written to them asking them to resign immediately, but Mr Vayeshnoi says they've done nothing wrong.

Mr Vayeshnoi says Labour's fully behind he and the other three, who are Chetanya Lakshman, Ragho Nand and Udit Narayan.

And he says he and his party do not oppose the multi party system..

"Well we all are for multi party cabinet, so is Mr Chaudhry. But new developments remain to be seen and it would be too early for me to comment on it."

Mr Vayeshnoi, who is the Energy Minister, claims he's unfazed about the salary drop he'll face from cabinet minister to backbencher.
