Forum foreign ministers to meet in Sydney to discuss Fiji crisis

12:40 pm on 27 November 2006

The foreign ministers of the Pacific Islands Forum countries are expected to meet in Sydney on Friday to discuss the threat of a coup in Fiji.

The Solomon Islands foreign minister, Patteson Oti, says the Forum Secretariat notified ministers that the meeting would be held and although details haven't been given, he's expecting it to focus on the looming constitutional crisis in Fiji with the impasse between the military and the government showing no signs of abating.

A spokesperson for New Zealand's Foreign minister, Winston Peters, says he's expected to attend the meeting, if it goes ahead.

Mr Oti says he will make a decision about whether to go later today.

The Forum Secretariat will release a statement on the meeting shortly.
