American Samoa governor continues search for an airline to replace Hawaiian

7:32 pm on 27 November 2006

The American Samoa governor Togiola Tulafono is still looking for other airlines to service the territory.

He has held discussions with United Airlines which is now exploring the feasibility of flying between

Honolulu and American Samoa.

The governor says he is also in negotiations with an unnamed Hawaii airline which is reviewing whether its fleet can accommodate flights to Pago Pago.

Hawaiian Airlines is the only airline flying between Honolulu and Pago Pago but Governor Togiola has

moved to terminate Hawaiian's service if a replacement carrier can be found.

The US Department of Transportation is expected to rule soon on a petition by Hawaiian to invalidate the governor's order on the basis that it is contrary to US laws.
