Fiji president bans police from Government House

Fiji's president and commander-in-chief of the military has banned all police from his official residence, Government House.

Fiji TV reports that the ban comes after police executed a search warrant at the President's Office last Friday to look for documents related to the military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

The Fiji President's Office has written a letter to the police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, expressing Ratu Josefa Iloilo's disappointment at the actions of the police.

Mr Hughes has not commented but the police spokeswoman, Sylvia Low, has confirmed that they have received the president's letter.

With Government House a NO GO zone for police, armed soldiers have moved in to ensure that the president's order is respected.

Commodore Bainimarama said at the weekend that part of the reason more than 3,000 territorial troops and naval reserves had been ordered into camp was to protect the president whom the police had branded as a criminal.
