American Samoan reservists to train in Philippines

11:40 am on 4 December 2006

A number of local reservists from American Samoa in the two combat units Bravo and Charlie will be sent to the Philippines in the early part of next year.

This is not a deployment but a training exercise that will involve the US Army, Navy and Air Force and the Philippines military.

An army reserve spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Howard Sugai says the exercise will take about a month and will familiarize military personnel form the two countries with each others tactics and manoeuvres.

Lieutenant Colonel Sugai says the event is designed so that if a situation arises where the two sides have to fight a common enemy, soldiers will be familiar with their fighting tactics.

A full combat military exercise will be carried out.
