Key road bridge in Solomon Islands reopened

4:37 pm on 7 December 2006

The Solomon Islands minister for infrastructure and development says a rebuilt bridge on the outskirts of Honiara is a symbol of the rebuilding of the nation following the years of tension.

Stanley Sofu opened the new Tanavasa bridge on the outskirts of Honiara saying transport is the life-blood of every nation.

He says a fully functioning road and bridge network plays a vital part in the daily economic and social activities of any country.

The Tanavasa Bridge was wrecked at the height of the tension.

Its reconstruction is part of the Post Conflict Emergency Rehabilitation Project, co-funded by the Asian Development Bank, the New Zealand Agency for International Development and the Regional Assistance Mission.
