There are conflicting reports over whether the Great Council of Chiefs is moving to hold discussions with the military.

A former head of the council, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, says he is trying to facilitate the return of the President Ratu Josefa Iloilo.

RNZI's Philippa Tolley reports from Suva

"Ratu Epeli Ganilau insists the head of the Council wanted to see the Commander and he advised the group to come to terms with the wishes of the military to re-instate Ratu Josefa. The current chairman, Ratu Ovini Bokini, has denied any such approach has been made and no further gatherings are planned. Meanwhile a group of leaders from Fiji's private sector says a speedy return to the rule of law is the only solution to the current situation. Otherwise, they say the economy will fail completely."
