Armed soldiers raid Fiji's Finance Ministry

6:40 pm on 8 December 2006

Two mini vans full of armed soldiers have raided Fiji's Ministry of Finance this afternoon.

The Chief Executive of the Ministry had earlier gone into hiding after ordering a spending limit of nearly 20 thousand dollars on the military and all Government ministries and departments.

After nearly an hour this afternoon, soldiers took away some papers, but no one appears to have been detained.

This morning, the military Land Force Commander, Colonel Pita Driti, questioned why the CEO and the Finance Minister had gone into hiding.

He told the FijiLive news site that he planned to have them in his office by the end of the day to answer his questions.
