Samoa Police Powers bill provides overseas armed forces to enter country

An NGO in Samoa says the proposed Police Powers Bill has a clause which will allow overseas contingents of police and armed forces to enter the country at the request of the government.

The bill is expected to be passed when parliament will reconvenes next week.

The legislation also proposes giving powers to the Commissioner of police to import or cause to import explosives, ammunition, and firearms for use by police in the exercise of their duties.

The chief executive officer of the Samoa Umbrella of non-governmental organization, Roina Vavatau, says it strongly rejects these provisions of the bill.

She is urging government leaders to reconsider their stance over the proposed bill.
