The Australian government has paid for a new rubbish tip in Tonga, which will be operational in 2007.

The Matangi Tonga Online reports the waste disposal site was constructed at a cost of 5 million U.S. dollars.

The new tip can accommodate special waste such as infectious hospital trash, pesticide containers, chemical containers, old pharmaceuticals, and recycle waste.

Its construction was completed in October this year.

The Government of Tonga jointly helped the Ministry of Works to construct the new tip, and a new Waste Authority Limited has been formed to run it.
