American Samoan tackles child abuse

4:20 pm on 14 December 2006

A private citizen in American Samoa is trying to raise awareness about the growing number of children who are sexually assaulted.

Lui McGoon wants to mobilize community support for the needs of both the victims and and the offenders.

He has organised a public rally this Saturday in the territory to discuss how offenders might be rehabilitated and the special attention that needs to be given to the victims of such crimes.

"I have rallied the support of several businesses and yes I will definitely be going out to rally more support for the business as a whole, and we hope to set up something in terms of public awareness and I definitely want to see that this mission that I am trying to put forward, will be a successful mission for the sake of the children."
