Pacific media body sanguine over Fiji editor

4:19 pm on 15 December 2006

The President of the Pacific Islands News Association has described as unfortunate, reports that the editor of a Fiji newspaper is to be deported by the military government there.

But, speaking from Suva, Ken Clark says his first concern is for the personal wellbeing of Daily Post editor Robert Wolfgramm, and then that the correct deportation procedures are followed.

"We would be concerned on the issue for a number of reasons, particularly in the beginning on his health and personal safety. And second concerned for the appropriate handling of a person consistent with his citizenship circumstances. The other matter I guess which would concern us is the principle of media freedom. And if that's being impinged in some way, that would be of significant concern to us."

Mr Clark, who's also General Manager Commercial at Fiji TV, says he doesn't feel his organisation is any way restricted in what it can currently report.
