Fiji's military commander says he has to be satisfied the country is absolutely corruption free before he hands over power to a civilian interim administration.
Commodore Bainimarama's comment comes just ahead of today's meeting of the Great Council of Chiefs to find a way out of the coup and restore the deposed Qarase government.
Commodore Bainimarama says the military's clean-up campaign, which has involved sacking government chief executives and other senior officers as well as the boards of state-owned enterprises, is aimed at weeding out corruption
Commodore Bainimarama says this should be of benefit to business and conducive to encouraging investment.
He says he is committed to returning the country to an interim civilian government.
But, he says, before he does that he wants to be absolutely sure the country is managed in a competent and corruption free manner that is fair for all the communities who call Fiji their home.
