The United States has stopped its assistance to Fiji and imposed a travel ban on Fiji military officials and members of the interim government.
The State Department has also called on Commodore Frank Bainimarama to abandon his extra-judicial activities, withdraw from politics and restore Fiji's legitimate democratically elected government.
It says the decision covers about 2.5 million US dollars in primarily military-related assistance.
The department says the sanction further precludes new economic assistance programs to the Fiji government under the Foreign Operations Appropriations Act, including the Millennium Challenge Account.
A spokesman says these measures will remain in place until the President or Secretary of State determines that a democratically elected government has taken office.
