Fiji police detain pro-democracy demonstrators

1:03 pm on 21 December 2006

Reports from Fiji say police have detained five people outside the venue of the meeting of the Great Council of Chiefs.

The Fijilive website reports that police seized them after they waved Fiji flags.

Before being led away, the group said it wanted to remind the chiefs of calls to return the country to democratic rule.

It is not known on whose instruction the police acted.

The military routinely cautions and questions people who challenges its activities which at times are outside the law.
