Australia in discussion with regional partners on Fiji's role with RAMSI

2:31 pm on 28 December 2006

The Australian government is discussing with other regional partners as to who will take over Fiji's rotation with RAMSI when it's next due.

This follows the federal government's decision to suspend all funding for Fiji's military involvement in the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands.

The Fiji military was to takeover the rotation from Tonga in March increasing it's numbers from the current one military officer to more than 30 officers in March, but this won't go ahead.

Australia is now speaking with other military partners in RAMSI including New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Tonga on how best to fill Fiji's position.
