Niue Premier says visitors to the island surprised by the improvements

Niue premier, Young Vivian, says family and friends returning home over the Christmas period have been pleasantly surprised with the way the country has improved since it was devastated by Cyclone Heta on New Years Day 2004.

Cyclone Heta reached hurricane force destroying the capital village Alofi and killing a nurse who sacrificed her life to save her baby.

Mr Vivian says Niueans who've returned home have noticed a huge difference.

"They left the country when the kitchens and the toilets and everything else was outside, and very primitive, now we have all the toilets water sealed or flushed, and we have water and we have electricity."
