Veteran lawmaker, Savali Talavou Ale, has been elected as the new speaker for the American Samoa House of Representatives.
He replaces Matagi McMoore, who lost the November 7th general election.
Savali received 11 votes over challenger Gaoteote Palie Tofau, another veteran lawmaker.
Savali is the longest serving member of the House and was vice speaker during the last legislative session.
Prior to election of new speaker, all 21 members of the House were sworn in to office.
Among them are two female House members, including incumbent Mary Taufete'e and former lawmaker Fiasili Haleck.
