Australian conman Peter Foster has been refused bail by a magistrates court in Port Vila.

Foster, who has successfully evaded prosecution in the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, was arrested by Vanautu police in a raid on a private home in an upmarket area of Port Vila called Malapoa Estate.

Following his arrest the Australian High Commission has appointed legal counsel to defend him in court on Thursday this week.

Foster will be tried for entering Vanuatu without travel documents.

The Public Prosecutions office has indicated that if he were found guilty as an illegal immigrant, he would most likely be deported back to Australia and not to Fiji, as there is no legally elected government in Suva at this time..

Regarding his alleged crimes in Fiji, the public prosecutions office said he could be prosecuted in Vanuatu if they had the documents sent over.
