The big-spending French second division club rugby Toulon, fresh from hiring the ex-All Blacks captain Tana Umaga on a lucrative short-term deal, has signed Australian coach Tim Lane.

Lane was assistant coach when the Wallabies won the 1999 World Cup and takes over as general manager and backs coach of the side that Umaga helped hoist to third in the competitive second-tier division.

Toulon was relegated from the Top-14 division last season.
