American Samoa Senate looks at imposing tax on imported bottled water to help fund Pacific Arts Fest

A measure introduced in the American Samoa Senate seeks to impose a 10 cents tax on imported bottled water with the money earmarked for the 2008 Pacific Arts Festival.

The bill says funding for the festival shall end on Dec. 31, 2008 and thereafter money collected with be re-allocated for other government services.

American Samoa will host the 10th Pacific Arts Festival in 2008 and the government estimates it will cost around $6 million.

About 26 countries and territories are expected to attend the festival, making it the largest gathering ever hosted by American Samoa.
