11:14 am on 24 January 2007

A military exercise involving reservists from Amercan Samoa that was scheduled for later this month in the Philippines has been canceled.

Two companies of the local U.S. Army Reserve were scheduled to take part in the training.

The cancellation came after Filipino authorities refused to turn over to the U.S. government a solider who was involved in an incident in the Philippines..

Army spokesman Lt. Col. Howard Sugai says when they did finally turn over the soldier, it was too late to revive the exercise.

The Army spokesman said there is a special agreement between the two sides as to how U.S. military personnel are treated and the U.S. government was following the agreement by seeking to have the solider come under U.S. control.
