The Pacific Islands Forum has launched a Young Professionals Scheme, an initiative born out of the Pacific Plan.

Six young professionals from the Pacific are to be placed in programmes at the secretariat as part of plans to develop capacity.

The Forum secretary general, Greg Urwin, says the Forum recognises the need to improve the human resources required for the implementation of the Pacific Plan.

He says the scheme seeks to provide a framework by which outstanding undergraduate and post-graduate students from diverse backgrounds can get practical experience at the Forum secretariat.

Mr Urwin says the hope is to foster a greater understanding of the challenges facing the Pacific, while providing the secretariat with the assistance of highly qualified young people.
