Niue hoping to re-issue licences to stranded trawlers

8:57 pm on 1 February 2007

The Niue Government is hoping two French Polynesian trawlers that have been lying idle in the island's harbour for nearly three months will soon be fishing again.

There have been concerns in Niue about sewage from the boats being discharged in the harbour and the state of the crew, who have been living on the boats.

The premier, Young Vivian, says the boats' licences to fish in Niue waters and supply the island's fish processor, Reef Fishing, had been withdrawn because they were not able to fulfil the requirements, while there were also debts owed.

He says new licences are likely to be issued.

"Hopefully there will be a new arrangement so that they can go out and fish."
