Vanuatu workers doing seasonal work in New Zealand

11:11 am on 5 February 2007

Forty-five workers from Vanuatu have arrived in Cromwell in the south of New Zealand's South Island as part of a pilot programme to use Pacific Island workers for seasonal work in vineyards and orchards.

The area has no unemployment and struggles to find enough workers for the busy fruit picking and wine production seasons.

The scheme is sponsored by the World Bank.
