Fiji considers pay cut for public servants

4:13 pm on 5 February 2007

Meetings are planned today between Fiji's minister of labour and the country's unions to discuss possible pay cuts for public servants.

The interim government has indicated that pay cuts and ministerial reductions might be part of the new budget to be announced next month.

The president of the Trade Union Congress, Daniel Urai, says it wants to find out why only public servants are targeted.

"Under such circumstances, that we have we understand that we have problems with the economy. The government needs to continue its machinery to run this government, to an extent we can see what they are trying to do, but all we ask for government is to sit with unions."

Daniel Urai says it will take strike action if the government goes ahead with its plan.
