Samoan doctor dismisses reports of compulsory vaccination for athletes

Samoa's deputy chairman of the medical committee for the South Pacific games in August, Dr Stanley Dean, has strongly denied reports that all athletes must be vaccinated for diseases such as typhoid before they enter the host country.

Dr Stanley says the vaccination is not compulsory and it's up to the athletes of each country.

But he emphasized that prevention is better than cure and says a medical bulletin containing advice for the participating teams will be released before the end of this month.

Dr Stanley's comments come after earlier reports which have quoted him as saying that no athletes would be allowed to compete if they had not be vaccinated.
