A policeman has been shot dead in an exchange of gunfire between police and soldiers in Mulia, the capital of Puncak Jaya, Papua.
The Jakarta Post newspaper says the shooting is believed to have been caused by a dispute earlier in the day while people were lining up to buy kerosene.
The victim allegedly got into a heated argument with an unidentified member of an army battalion based nearby.
The newspaper says the shooting took place about two hours after the argument.
It says it is still not known if the argument was the cause of the armed clash between the two groups.
