An estimated 400 people marched through the capital of French Polynesia yesterday in the third anti-government demonstration in three weeks.

The opposition Union For Democracy held the rally to call for the resignation of President Gaston Tong Sang and fresh general elections.

The opposition has vowed to hold such rallies each week until the French presidential election in April.

The pro-independence opposition backs the Socialist candidate, Segolene Royal, while the new government affiliated to the ruling French UMP Party supports Nicolas Sarkozy.
