Pacific states agree to secure greater ocean wealth

Pacific states have agreed to join efforts in a bid to secure potential greater ocean wealth that may include gold, silver, oil and gas.

The three-day meeting in Brisbane on maritime boundary talks focused on assessments conducted by the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission, or SOPAC.

The studies identified strong grounds for some Pacific countries to extend sovereignty over their continental shelves.

PNG's ambassador to the UN, Robert Aisi, said the states had committed to supporting each other without prejudice to national sovereignty.
