A 32-year-old mother in Samoa has been sentenced to two years in jail for causing the death of her son.

Pemita Tutogi pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the death of her 12-year-old son October of last year in Faleapuna.

Police said the offender had struck her son with a stick because he had been gambling with other kids in the village, while he was supposed to be looking after the younger children.

Police said when she saw her son she threw a stick at him as he was running away, and it struck him in the back of the neck.

He continued running but collapsed in front of their neighbour's house.

He was rushed off to Lufilufi hospital, where he died from internal bleeding.
