Fiji activists charged with illegal procession

7:45 pm on 19 February 2007

Five Fiji activists who staged a demonstration calling for democracy outside the venue of a meeting of the Great Council of Chiefs in December have appeared in the Suva magistrate's court charged with illegal procession.

Then five are businesswoman Laisa Digitaki, who said earlier she was in hiding, Pita Waqavonovono, Jacqueline Koroi, Unaisa Damuru and Tura Lewai.

All have denied the charges against them and have been granted bail to reappear in court in June.

Ms Digitaki has been quoted as saying she came out of hiding after the military assured her that she would not be taken in again.
