French National Front decries New Caledonia voting restriction

2:49 pm on 22 February 2007

The National Front in France has strongly criticised the constitutional amendments which among others are now restricting French voter right in new Caledonia.

The French Congress overwhelmingly voted to impose residency restrictions in New Caledonia in line with the 1998 Noumea Accord on greater autonomy.

The National Front says the move is a disgrace and a crime against democracy.

The party says those pushing for restricting the voting rights of French citizens in its overseas territory are the same who call for foreigners to be given the right to vote in France.

It says while the Congress was to serve the President's vanity it has only added to his shame.
