PNG Southern Highlands government may be back before new suspension

3:18 pm on 22 February 2007

The Southern Highlands provincial government in Papua New Guinea, which has been suspended since the middle of last year, is expected to be re-instated at midnight tonight when a state of emergency expires.

However, the national government, which has been struggling to get enough parliamentary support to extend the emergency, has indicated that it will re-suspend the administration through an order in council.

Today parliament had to be adjourned because it lacked a quorum.

The government had imposed the state of emergency after concerns at the alleged corruption and mismanagement of the administration headed by governor Hami Yawari.

But as our correspondent, Alex Rheeney, reports Mr Yawari will not have his old job back for long.

"Only for a matter of hours. That will depend as to when Sir Michael will get cabinet to act to suspend the provincial government again. He said it again yesterday, so it could only be a matter of hours whether it happens tomorrow or early next week is yet to be seen"
