French Polynesian squatters removed by police

2:53 pm on 27 February 2007

French riot police have evicted a group of families in Tahiti who the court has determined occupied a land area illegally.

The move follows a court decision ordering the eighty families to vacate the premises of the SPPH in Faa'a.

The Tahitipresse news agency says the squatters had blocked the access road to the area to prevent equipment to be brought in to demolish a former hotel on the site.

The evicted families say they will fight their eviction in court.
