PNG court ruling on Highlands emergency imminent

4:17 pm on 1 March 2007

The Papua New Guinea supreme court will rule this afternoon on whether a state of emergency remains in place in Southern Highlands province.

The state of emergency was first instituted in August last year, suspending the provincial government of Hami Yawari, amid claims of widespread corruption.

But it lapsed last week and after several attempts by the government to get parliamentary backing for an extension, cabinet made an order in council to re-establish the state of emergency.

Mr Yawari asked for a judicial review of that move and the Supreme Court will announce its decision shortly.
